Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is known as the great engineer in India who introduced several modern-day mechanisms and commendable infrastructural projects throughout his career.
Popularly known as Sir MV, he is responsible for introducing a revolutionary irrigation system in India that caters to several dams and reservoirs, including the current largest reservoir system in Asia – Mysuru’s Krishnaraj Sagar dam. His efforts and teachings have also led to the invention of a WWII armoured vehicle that was manufactured by Tata Steel engineers.
It’s to honour this great mind that India celebrates 15 September as National Engineer’s Day. His books Reconstructing India (1920) and Planned Economy of India (1934) still inspire several engineers across the nation and are responsible for the infrastructure of many cities even today. While several political leaders honour and acknowledge the contribution of engineers, a meme fest fills on Twitter.
