With over 2,000 players from 187 countries participating, the city is excited to host the prestigious event from 28 July – 10 August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the olympiad at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium.
Five-tier security is in place ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit with over 22,000 police officers on duty, said Chennai Police.
The driveway in front of the arrival terminal of Chennai airport has been beautified with more than 3,500 plants. The walls of Tamil Nadu Urban Development Office near Marina Beach are covered with mural paintings.
Chief Minister MK Stalin tweeted, “Chennai is all set to host one of the biggest sporting events in its nearly four centuries of existence.”
This time, top contenders Russia and China are not participating. Legendary Viswanathan Anand taking on the role of mentor gives the Indian teams a winning shot.
A total of 188 teams are participating for the open section and 162 for the women’s section. India is fielding two teams in both the sections along with an additional team to even the number of entries.
Team A has Vidit Gujrathi, Pentala Harikrishna, Arjun Erigiasi, SL Narayanan and Kiran Sasikiran.
Team B has B Adhiban, R Praggnanandhha, Nihal Sarin, D Gukesh and Raunak Sadhwani.
Team C has Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Karthikeyan Murali, SP Sethuraman, Abhijeet Gupta, Abhimanyu Puranik
In the Women’s section,
Team A has Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, Tania Sachdev and Bhakti Kulkarni.
Team B has Vantika Agarwal, Sowmya Swaminathan, Mary Ann Gomes, Padmini Rout and Divya Deshmukh.
Team C has Eesha Karavde, Sahiti Varshini, Partyusha Bodda, Nandhidhaa PV and Vishwa Vasnawala.
