Three laborers sustained burn injuries due to a damaged gas pipeline during excavation work for the Safe City Project in Burari, north Delhi. The incident took place on Monday afternoon, as reported by the police on Tuesday.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Sagar Singh Kalsi, the laborers, who were employed by a contractor working on the Safe City Project, accidentally struck an Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) pipeline while digging the ground.
The impact resulted in burn injuries to three welding workers, and the pipeline itself was also damaged. The injured workers received medical treatment at a hospital and were later discharged.
In response to the pipeline damage, IGL engineers were summoned to the scene for repairs. However, a confrontation arose when three individuals prevented the engineers from conducting the necessary repairs. As a result, the police were called in to mediate the situation, ultimately allowing the repairs to proceed.
Allegations surfaced that some individuals had behaved improperly towards the IGL staff during the incident. Despite this, the repair work was successfully completed.
In light of a complaint lodged by an IGL employee, a case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention), as detailed by Kalsi.
Earlier, in April, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena had instructed the Delhi Police to operationalize the ‘Safe City Project’ by August. The objective of the project is to enhance safety for women in public spaces and prevent crimes against them. (With inputs from PTI)
