Delhi Capitals beat Lucknow Super Giants by 19 runs in their final league game of the 2024 Indian Premier League in Delhi on Tuesday, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
Opting to bat first, DC posted a formidable 208 for four. Opener Abhishek Porel led the charge with a 33-ball 58, supported by a rearguard act from Tristan Stubbs, who smashed 57 not out off 25 deliveries. Shai Hope also contributed with a handy 38 off 27 balls.
Despite tight spells from Ravi Bishnoi and Mohsin Khan, Rishabh Pant’s cameo of 33 off 23 balls and Axar Patel’s quick 14 off 10 balls helped DC cross the 200-run mark.
Lucknow Super Giants began their chase shakily, losing three quick wickets to impact substitute Ishant Sharma, who finished with figures of 3/34. Despite being reduced to 44 for four in the fifth over, Nicholas Pooran kept LSG in contention with a blistering 61 off 27 balls. Arshad Khan’s unbeaten 58 off 33 deliveries added to the resistance, but LSG ultimately fell short, ending at 189 for nine.
With this victory, Delhi Capitals finished the league stage with 14 points and a Net Run Rate of -0.377. They remain in contention for the playoffs but will need favorable outcomes from other matches, particularly those involving Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants will face Mumbai Indians in their final league game on May 17, with their playoff hopes still intact.
The win also confirmed Rajasthan Royals as the second team to qualify for the playoffs.
