Delhi recorded a 29.2 per cent reduction in road accident fatalities this year up to September 15, according to official data. The data shows that 1,031 people lost their lives in 3,894 road accidents during this period, compared to 1,457 deaths in 5,715 fatal accidents in the same timeframe last year.
A senior police officer stated that road accidents decreased by 31.85 per cent, from 5,715 to 3,894, while fatalities dropped by 29.2 per cent from 1,457 to 1,031. “Our improved road safety measures and strict law enforcement are delivering results. We are dedicated to ensuring safer roads for commuters,” said the officer from the Delhi Traffic Police.

However, wrong-side driving on Delhi roads has increased by 20.63 per cent as of August 31 this year. Police reported issuing 1,24,593 notices in 2023 for such violations, compared to 1,03,283 notices last year. The number of challans for driving against the flow of traffic rose by 29 per cent this year, with 76,849 challans issued between January 1 and August 31, compared to 59,527 during the same period last year.
Additionally, the Delhi Traffic Police issued over 87,000 challans and more than three lakh notices for red light violations this year up to September 15.
