On November 18, Delhi Metro recorded its highest-ever daily ridership, with an impressive 78.67 lakh passenger journeys, according to official data. This surpassed the previous record of 77.49 lakh passengers set on August 20 of this year.
The Yellow Line, which connects Millennium City Centre in Gurugram to Samaypur Badli in Delhi, saw the highest passenger traffic on November 18, with 20.99 lakh commuters. The Blue Line followed closely with 20.80 lakh passengers, while the Red Line recorded 8.56 lakh passengers, the Pink Line had 8.15 lakh, and the Violet Line saw 7.93 lakh. Other lines, including the Magenta Line with 6.19 lakh passengers, Green Line with 4.12 lakh, and the Airport Line with 81,985 commuters, also reported significant ridership. Rapid Metro had 57,701 passengers, and the Grey Line recorded 50,128.
As thick grey haze continued to blanket the city, with pollution levels remaining dangerously high at 488 in the ‘severe plus’ category, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has taken steps to encourage more people to use the metro. The DMRC is running 60 additional trips on weekdays to offer greater capacity, an official statement noted.
Since August, the DMRC has reported 25 of its highest passenger ridership days, the statement added. It emphasised that increased metro ridership over private vehicles would reduce vehicular emissions, improving the air quality in Delhi and its neighbouring areas.
To further enhance convenience, the DMRC has introduced several initiatives, such as allowing passengers to book single or multiple journey tickets through digital platforms, enabling them to plan their travel anytime, anywhere, without having to wait in queues.
Additionally, partnerships with organizations like IRCTC, NCRTC, ITPO, and others have made it easier for passengers to not only travel by metro but also access interconnected travel options, along with various offers and events, the statement said.
The DMRC also highlighted that it is one of the most eco-friendly transport systems, being the first metro network in the world to be registered for carbon credits by the United Nations for its environmental efforts.
