Police said the driver had a medical emergency, causing the bus to hit several vehicles before ramming the auto

A fatal road accident occurred in east Delhi’s Shakarpur area on Monday morning when a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) Devi bus lost control and rammed into several vehicles, ultimately killing an auto-rickshaw driver.

According to police, the incident took place around 9 AM. Preliminary investigation suggests that the bus driver may have suffered a medical emergency, causing the vehicle to veer off course and collide with six to seven vehicles before crashing into the auto-rickshaw.

Officials said further details will be available after a complete assessment of the scene.

The tragedy comes amid a troubling rise in road accidents across Delhi, especially during the ongoing monsoon season. Data from the Delhi Traffic Police shows that the capital witnessed 1,160 accidents between May 1 and July 15 this year—up from 1,128 during the same period in 2024.

While the number of injury-related accidents has increased by over 7 per cent, from 1,046 last year to 1,128 this year, non-injury crashes have declined—suggesting that recent incidents have been more serious in nature. However, fatal accidents have seen a slight dip, from 311 in 2024 to 271 in 2025.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Kime Kaming pointed to worsening road conditions as a key factor. “We’ve repeatedly urged civic agencies to address infrastructure issues like waterlogging,” he said. “Unfortunately, there’s been minimal response. These conditions continue to put motorcyclists and pedestrians at the greatest risk.”
