The National Green Tribunal has sought a response from the Delhi government and others on the alleged large-scale illegal extraction of groundwater in Najafgarh.
The green body was hearing a plea claiming unauthorised extraction by “private tanker mafia” operators in a plot in the Pankaj Garden locality of the area.
In an order dated April 13, a bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert members A Senthil Vel and Afroz Ahmad noted the plea alleging “collusion and inaction on the part of the authorities”, including the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
“Issue notice to the respondents,” the bench said.
The respondents in the matter include the Delhi government, DJB, the sub-divisional magistrate and district magistrate concerned, Delhi Police, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and others.
The matter has been posted to July 10 for further proceedings.
