Delhi: A 32-year-old man was shot by a teenager inside a ward at GTB Hospital in Delhi on Sunday, police said.

The victim, Riyazuddin, had been hospitalised since June 23 for treatment of an abdominal infection.

The incident occurred in Ward 24 of the hospital, according to police, who noted there was a single shooter.

Riyazuddin succumbed to his gunshot wound, as confirmed by the police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary stated that a PCR call regarding the incident was received at the GTB Enclave police station.

Upon arrival, police discovered that the patient, Riyazuddin, had been injured and was later declared dead by doctors.

At approximately 4 pm, an 18-year-old entered the ward and shot Riyazuddin, the officer said.

“A case is being registered, and teams have been formed to apprehend the suspect. Initial investigations suggest personal enmity,” the DCP added.

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced that a security review of all hospitals will be conducted, with no tolerance for negligence.

A hospital official said a group of people pushed the doctor aside, shot the patient, and fled.

“No one else was injured. The SHO of GTB Enclave, ACP, and Crime Branch officers arrived at the scene after being notified by the CMO on duty,” read an official statement from GTB hospital.

A nurse, speaking anonymously, said the teenager entered the ward at 3:59 pm, asking everyone to stay calm before revealing a concealed pistol and shooting the patient.

The gunshot attracted a crowd outside the ward, with one person notifying the police.

“It was a terrifying experience for everyone in the ward,” the nurse added. (With inputs from PTI)
