A taxi driver from Punjab allegedly strangled his friend over a financial dispute at a hotel in Vasant Kunj, southwest Delhi, police said on Saturday.

Mandeep Singh, 32, from Rup Nagar in Punjab, was arrested on Friday night in Karol Bagh. Police recovered the victim’s car, wallet, and clothes from him.

The victim, Rohit, 28, was found dead in a hotel bathroom on Thursday by staff, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Rohit Meena.

Hotel staff informed police that Rohit and Mandeep had arrived at the hotel by car around 1:30 am on July 4. Mandeep left the hotel around 3:20 am.

The next morning, staff discovered Rohit’s body in the bathroom.

A team was formed to locate Mandeep, the primary suspect. Using technical evidence, the team also conducted a raid in Chandigarh and alerted immigration authorities since Mandeep holds a passport.

Rohit and Mandeep had come from Punjab to drop off a passenger at Indira Gandhi International Airport and decided to rest at a hotel overnight. During their stay, they argued over a financial dispute, leading Mandeep to strangle Rohit in the bathroom and flee with his car, wallet, and clothes.

Mandeep also withdrew money from Rohit’s ATM card. The investigation is ongoing. (With inputs from PTI)
