In an alleged road-rage incident near the Red Fort, a 36-year-old cab driver tragically lost his life, while a beggar was injured by gunfire, police said.
According to authorities, they were alerted by LNJP Hospital at 1:50 am on Monday regarding Mohammad Sakib, a resident of Zakir Nagar, who was admitted with gunshot wounds, along with a teenager named Luv Khush (15), from Palwal.
“After receiving the PCR call, a team was dispatched to the scene. Later, we learned that Sakib, who sustained a gunshot wound to his upper abdomen, passed away during treatment,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) M K Meena.
The investigation revealed that around 12 am, a cab traveling from Kodia Pul to the Chatta Rail Crossing allegedly collided with a battery e-rickshaw, sparking an altercation between the cab driver and the e-rickshaw driver.
Sakib, the cab driver, was forcefully pulled out of his vehicle by two individuals, according to the officer.
“As bystanders gathered, the cab driver managed to subdue one of his attackers,” the officer continued, noting that one of the assailants then shot Sakib and Luv Kush, a local beggar.
“Both victims were rushed to LNJP Hospital by passersby. Forensic analysis of the scene has been conducted, and an FIR has been registered under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC, as well as provision 27 of the Arms Act… We are also reviewing CCTV footage,” the DCP added.
