Delhi police have apprehended a 37-year-old woman hailing from Bihar on suspicion of trafficking stolen high-end Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), authorities disclosed on Tuesday.
The suspect, identified as Lovely Singh, a resident of Patliputra in Bihar, was apprehended on April 3 as part of an operation initiated subsequent to the arrest of her husband, Govind, last year, in connection with a stolen Maruti Brezza, revealed Deputy Commissioner of Police (east) Apoorva Gupta.
“Gleaning insights during interrogation, Govind unveiled that his spouse, Lovely, had been receiving multiple stolen luxury vehicles from Delhi, subsequently redistributing them in Bihar and Jharkhand,” disclosed the DCP.
Despite concerted efforts by law enforcement, Singh managed to elude capture by frequently changing her abode and inhabiting prominent communities to deflect suspicion, the DCP noted.
“Subsequently, a Non-Bailable Warrant was issued against her, and she was declared a proclaimed offender by the Court on December 20, 2023. Finally, on April 3, Lovely was apprehended in the Patliputra area, with her transit remand duly secured,” outlined the DCP.
During interrogation, Lovely recounted her journey from graduation to her stint in an insurance company, where she encountered individuals engaged in the illicit trade of stolen vehicles, the DCP disclosed.
“Both she and her husband, Govind, became entangled in the trade of stolen vehicles. Furthermore, she admitted to a prior arrest in Ranchi, Jharkhand, in 2021, pertaining to stolen vehicles and robbery,” elucidated the DCP.
Additionally, Lovely disclosed her ties with car lifters and other recipients of pilfered luxury automobiles, affirming her involvement in the acquisition and distribution of such vehicles.
Authorities have impounded nine SUVs, including models such as Toyota Fortuner and Hyundai Alcazar. An ongoing investigation is in progress, the DCP concluded.
