Thirty-nine individuals have tragically lost their lives, with over 100 sustaining injuries in fire incidents in the national capital this year, official data said.
Data from the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) reveals that in January, 16 fatalities were reported, followed by another 16 in February, and seven in March up to Thursday.
These incidents resulted in 51 injuries in January, 42 in February, and 14 until March 14, according to the DFS.
Between January 1 and March 14, the DFS received a total of 2,682 fire-related calls.
On Thursday, a devastating fire in the Shastri Nagar area of Delhi’s Shahdara claimed the lives of two children and a married couple due to suffocation.
In another significant incident, an explosion and subsequent blaze in a paint factory at Dayalpur market in outer Delhi’s Alipur resulted in 11 casualties. Four individuals were injured in the fire that erupted on February 15.
The bodies of the 11 victims, comprising 10 men and a woman, were found within the factory premises, which also housed chemical godowns.
The fire, preceded by an explosion, spread to nearby structures, including a drug rehabilitation center and eight shops. A police constable sustained injuries, including burns, in the blaze.
In a separate February incident, an 83-year-old woman lost her life, and her granddaughter sustained injuries after they leaped from the fourth floor of a residential building in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka during a fire in their apartment. (With inputs from PTI)
