One of the most popular markets of Delhi-NCR, Banjara Market, has again been shifted – this time from sector 53 in Gurugram to sector 70A. The market, which is run by the Gadia Lohar community, is known as the go-to destination to buy furniture and home decor items at affordable prices. More than 400 hutments are being built as shops and homes for the shopkeepers and their families.
The Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) demolished shanties and shops in October last year and removed the community from sector 53. They stated that the hutments had come up on government land, which has been earmarked for the construction of a group housing society, a bus stand and a college. But when temporary hutments returned, the HSVP conducted another demolition exercise this year in April.
