IndiGo and Akasa Air have moved all flight operations from Terminal 2 (T2) to Terminal 1 (T1) at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), following the temporary closure of T2 for maintenance.
An airport official confirmed on Tuesday that flight operations remain normal despite the change.
Currently, only Terminals 1 and 3 are operational at IGIA, which is managed by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). Of the airport’s four runways, one is also closed for maintenance.
T2, built nearly four decades ago, was previously used exclusively by IndiGo and Akasa Air. With its closure, all flights from the terminal have been fully shifted to T1.
Both airlines said on Monday that measures were being taken to ensure a smooth transition. IndiGo stated it had proactively informed passengers about the terminal change, while Akasa Air said its teams were working diligently to ensure seamless operations at T1.
According to DIAL, the expanded T1 now has the capacity to handle 40 million passengers annually, while T3 can accommodate 45 million. T2 had a capacity of 15 million passengers per year.
Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam said on Monday that T1 and T3 are expected to manage passenger traffic efficiently, and no major congestion is anticipated due to the closure of T2.
IGIA currently handles around 1,300 flight movements each day.
