A Rs 150-crore high-security prison with AI surveillance and advanced security systems will come up in Delhi's Narela

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday virtually laid the foundation stone for a high-security prison designed with a radial-axial layout in the Narela area of outer Delhi.

This facility will accommodate 250 inmates and is expected to be completed in two years, officials said.

The prison will feature AI-enabled CCTV surveillance, body-worn cameras, biometric access control, automated locking systems, full-body scanners, X-ray baggage scanners, mobile signal jammers, video conferencing facilities, an in-house court complex, anti-tunnelling technology, and a state-of-the-art command and control centre, according to a statement from the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office.

This prison is set to become one of the most modern, technology-driven high-security facilities in the country.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has allocated Rs 100 crore for the project, while the Delhi government will cover the remaining costs, bringing the total estimated expenditure to around Rs 150 crore.

The facility will be able to accommodate more than 250 inmates.

Unlike conventional prisons, it will be built on global security standards, having a radial-axial design to enable monitoring of every wing from a central control point.

Each inmate will reside in an individual cell, minimising the chances of interaction, gang networking, and other security risks.

Additionally, each cell will include an independent toilet and bathing facility to reduce unnecessary movement among inmates.

This project aims to set a new benchmark in security, surveillance, rapid response, and technology-driven prison management.
