After killing his wife and two sons, including a four-month-old infant, a 38-year-old man tried to end his life in west Delhi’s Mohan Garden area on Sunday.
The man was identified as Rajesh (38) and preliminary investigation revealed that he committed the crime “over financial issues”. His 35-year-old wife and sons, the elder aged 5, sustained stab injuries on their necks.
Rajesh inflicted a deep injury on his wrist, the police said, adding that he is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The accused sent WhatsApp messages to his friends in the early hours of Sunday about his financial woes. His friends alerted his brother, who informed the police around 6 am, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) M Harsha Vardhan said.
The parents of the man, both aged above 75, were present in another room when the incident took place and police are talking to them, he said.
Rajesh runs a general store. Earlier, he used to run a company that was engaged in ISO certification-related work. A case of murder will be registered at the Mohan Garden police station, the DCP said.
According to police, the weapon of offence, a knife, has been recovered from the spot. It is being ascertained whether Rajesh bought the knife recently for this purpose, the police said.
Rajesh is undergoing treatment at a hospital. The post-mortem examination of the bodies will be conducted on Monday, they said.
In his WhatsApp messages, Rajesh mentioned that he had suffered a huge financial loss.
“He claimed that his ISO certification business was affected after the COVID-19 lockdown as his employees betrayed him and took all his customers from him. He also alleged that several people defrauded him of different amounts like Rs 5,000 and Rs 7,000 on the pretext of getting him a loan.
“He said that he also paid money to a person to help him and his brother-in-law get a job and that he had taken a loan at an interest of 3 per cent to give money to a woman who lives in his neighbourhood and ties rakhi to him,” a police official said.
