The Delhi government has allocated Rs 500 crore for the Delhi Metro in its 2024-25 Budget.
The budget was tabled on Monday by Finance Minister Atishi, who highlighted that over 60 lakh people commute on the service daily. This represents a significant increase from 2014 when only 24 lakh passengers used the urban transporter each day.
Presenting the 2024-25 Budget with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore, Atishi underscored the government’s responsibility to provide excellent public transportation to all Delhi residents. She also acknowledged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s guidance in improving the city’s public transportation sector.
Under Atishi’s tenure, the metro network has expanded dramatically. By March 2015, there were 193 kilometers of metro network and 143 stations in Delhi. As of now, the network spans 393 kilometers with 288 stations.
Atishi noted the substantial increase in daily ridership, from 24 lakh in 2014 to over 60 lakh today. The metro system now serves every corner of Delhi, including previously underserved areas like the Tikri border, Samaypur Badli, Tikri Kalan, Badarpur border, and Shiv Vihar.
She announced an outlay of Rs 500 crore for the Delhi Metro in the current financial year, further boosting its expansion and modernization efforts. The Delhi Metro remains the largest and busiest rapid transit system in India, linking the national capital region with its surrounding cities.
Operating under the aegis of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the metro system is a public sector company established in May 1995 by the governments of India and Delhi.
