Delhi Police personnel on Saturday caught two persons in possession of heroin worth Rs 55 lakh in the international market.
The information was received secretly by a senior constable associated with the Crime Branch. The two accused, according to the police, have been identified as Armid, 27, and Salif, 40. The former is a Nigerian national while the latter is from Ivory Coast.
The police recovered 550 grams of heroin from the accused.
According to Satish Kumar, the Deputy Commissioner of PolicePolice, Crime Branch, officials associated with the case had laid a trap at Maidan Garhi in South District, near Chhatarpur.
“The team worked tirelessly and after careful surveillance, apprehended the two African nationals. The heroin recovered from them was worth Rs 55 lakh. On the basis of recovery, a case under sections 8, 21 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, was lodged against the accused,” he said.
Section 8 of the Act deals with the prohibition of cultivation of cocoa, poppy and cannabis plants, alongside the ban on the trade of any other psychotropic substances (except for medicinal use). Section 21, on the other hand, deals with the punishment for contravention in relation to manufactured drugs and preparations, while Section 29 deals with the punishment for abetment and criminal conspiracy to flout the norms of the Act.
Presently, both the accused have been arrested. It was also discovered by the police personnel that both were staying in India illegally as they did not have either visas or passports on them.
