On the 78th Independence Day, Director General of Delhi Prisons, Satish Golcha, announced that more than 1,160 convicts have been granted remission. He also shared that 1,248 additional CCTV cameras equipped with face recognition systems have been installed to improve inmate safety.
According to a statement from Delhi Prisons, Tihar, Golcha announced the special remission on Thursday after raising the tricolour on the premises. The remission, ranging from 15 to 25 days, was granted to 1,160 eligible convicts based on their conduct during their time in prison.
Addressing the staff, Golcha stated that new criminal laws have been implemented across all Delhi Prisons, and work is progressing on the online production of inmates before courts. He emphasized the department’s focus on ‘Correctional Philosophy,’ highlighting education and skill development programs for inmates.
Golcha mentioned that the department is working with Max Healthcare Facilities, Primero, the Union Ministry of Tourism, IOCL, FICCI, and Art of Living to provide vocational training and strengthen rehabilitation programs within Delhi Prisons.
Health and well-being initiatives were also underscored, with screening tests for HIV, Hepatitis B, and syphilis conducted for 10,573 prisoners. Additionally, a special cervical cancer screening camp was organized in collaboration with AIIMS at jail number six.
Golcha also noted that a proposal for the creation of 3,200 new posts in Delhi Prisons is in an advanced stage of consideration.
