In celebration of Chuseok, one of Korea’s most significant holidays, the Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI) in Delhi is hosting a special Songpyeon Making Workshop on Friday, September 13. The workshop, which will run from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the KCCI, offers participants a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Korean culture by learning to prepare Songpyeon, a traditional Korean rice cake.
Chuseok, often referred to as Korean Thanksgiving, is a time for family gatherings, giving thanks for the harvest, and celebrating fresh crops. The Songpyeon dessert, a symbol of gratitude, bears a delightful resemblance to the Indian sweet dish Gujiya, making this event a blend of cultural similarities between Korea and India.
“There are intriguing parallels between Chuseok and Indian festivals,” said a KCCI representative. “From the Songpyeon-Gujiya resemblance to Chuseok’s moon-watching tradition, which is similar to the Karvachauth full moon prayer, both cultures share a common thread in their celebrations of family and the harvest, much like Pongal and Baisakhi in India”.

In addition to the hands-on Songpyeon workshop, participants will also engage in traditional Korean games, providing a fun and interactive way to experience the richness of Korean culture. The event will conclude with a group photo session.
