Indo-Pak tensions: In response to rising military tensions between India and Pakistan, Delhi authorities have ramped up emergency preparedness measures across the city. From installing air-raid sirens and activating control rooms to deploying civil defence personnel and organising mock drills, the capital is taking a range of steps to gear up for any potential crisis.
Security has been significantly tightened at key installations, including government offices and high-footfall areas such as markets, railway stations, shopping malls, metro stations and public parks.
At the administrative level, all 11 revenue districts have begun implementing contingency plans. A senior official from the revenue department confirmed that air-raid sirens are being strategically installed across the city.
“Locations have been identified, and sirens are currently being installed,” the official said. “The Civil Defence Directorate conducted a test run of a siren on top of the multi-storey PWD building at ITO on Friday afternoon. Similar tests will follow in other parts of the city.”
Each district will receive 10 air-raid sirens, tailored to cover specific radii—ranging from two to sixteen kilometres—to ensure blanket coverage with no signal blind spots.

In East Delhi, officials have deployed civil defence personnel at the office of the district magistrate and activated the district control room. In Central Delhi, 50 civil defence volunteers are undergoing training and will be posted in key locations.
“Alongside mock drills, public awareness campaigns will be held to inform residents on how to respond during emergencies such as air raids,” said an official. “Control rooms are being upgraded, and inter-agency coordination meetings are planned to streamline the response mechanism.”
Additionally, the Delhi government’s services department has issued a directive suspending all employee leave until further notice, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
