An event titled “Khatamband: Geometric Algorithm” by Manjeet Bullar is going to be organised at Bikaner House on November 3. The event is a celebration of the intricate craftsmanship that originated in Persia and thrived in the picturesque Kashmir Valley.

The furniture showcased in the exhibition utilises the same woodworking technique as that employed in Khatamband. Khatamband, known for its intricate craftsmanship, employs fine woods like walnut, deodar, rosewood, ebony, and teakwood to create stunning geometric and floral patterns. Manjeet Bullar has skillfully incorporated this exquisite woodworking technique, breathing new life into history, as he often emphasises, “History is now”.

In the 15th century, Mirza Hayder Doulat played a pivotal role in promoting Khatamband, making it an integral part of Kashmir’s cultural identity. Beyond its aesthetic charm, Khatamband’s insulating properties made it an indispensable feature during the harsh winters of Kashmir.

Khatamband has left its mark on various aspects of Kashmir’s culture, adorning mosques and gracing the houseboats on Dal Lake. It has become a symbol of Kashmir’s exceptional craftsmanship. Today, Manjeet Bullar is on a mission to reimagine this rich heritage by creating a unique line of bespoke furniture and accessories that seamlessly blend tradition with contemporary elegance.

“It is a spectrum of contemporary Indian design drawing inspiration from the historical Khatamband, and reimagining this concept in the modern Era of geometric designs,” says Bullar about the exhibition.

When: November 3 – November 5

Where: Bikaner House, Shahjahan Road
