Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has announced that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is committed to eliminating “small garbage accumulations” and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of these locations.
Addressing a press conference, Oberoi shared that the MCD has launched a comprehensive sanitation initiative aimed at cleansing all 250 sectors within the city. She expressed her vision for Delhi’s future, stating, “In the forthcoming years, we aspire to witness Delhi’s streets exuding the same cleanliness and orderliness characteristic of cities like London and New York.”
Oberoi underscored the necessity of addressing the issue of localized garbage build-up, noting, “Certain areas suffer from the emergence of small garbage accumulations due to improper disposal practices.” She assured, “Our resolve is to dismantle these accumulations and transform these sites into aesthetically pleasing spaces.”
In the pursuit of this goal, Oberoi explained that specialised teams have been established to conduct comprehensive surveys of different localities, capturing images through the MCD application. Subsequent to this documentation, the designated areas will undergo thorough cleaning operations.
Highlighting the context, Oberoi reflected, “During the previous administration, Delhi encountered the emergence of three localized garbage accumulations over a span of 15 years. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal pledged to prioritize the restoration of Delhi’s cleanliness. Today marks the second day of the ‘Ab Dilli Hogi Saaf’ (Now Delhi Will Be Clean) initiative, which is set to continue throughout the year.”
The mayor elaborated on the strategy employed, detailing, “We have formed teams comprising 3,000 members, with each unit responsible for inspecting 50 lanes. If any member identifies garbage in a lane, an image will be promptly uploaded onto the MCD application. The MCD workforce will expeditiously attend to these areas and conduct the necessary cleaning.”
Oberoi conveyed the plan for greater administrative oversight, stating that deputy commissioners have been tasked with identifying and monitoring all points of garbage accumulation within their respective zones.
“With strategic focus on areas prone to regular dumping and the consequent formation of small garbage accumulations, we intend to carry out daily inspections and clean-up routines to prevent the accumulation of waste,” Oberoi concluded.
