The Delhi government is set to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the potential construction of an elevated flyover in Bawana Village, connecting it to nearby Kanjhawala and Narela Road, according to officials.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated the process by inviting tenders to appoint a consultant who will be responsible for conducting the study. The proposal for the flyover was put forth by Bawana MLA Jai Bhagwan.
An official outlined the scope of the study, stating, “The consultant will conduct a Traffic Volume Count survey for all categories of vehicles over a 24-hour period on any midweek working day, documenting all turning movements with the classification of vehicles at every intersection.”
Additionally, the consultant will analyze survey data, including peak-hour traffic flow and peak-hour intersection load, to assess the necessity for either a flyover or an underpass.
To determine the viability of the project, the consultant will carry out a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis, taking into consideration economic, environmental, and social costs. The resulting report will include details on potential savings in journey time, man-hours, fuel consumption, and reductions in vehicular emissions.
“The consultant will be responsible for preparing drawings, a comprehensive report, and a presentation outlining the proposed flyover or underpass scheme,” explained the official.
The envisioned elevated flyover aims to link Bawana Village with DSIIDC Bawana, Auchandi, Kanjhawala, and Narela Road.
The initiative stemmed from a request by Bawana MLA Jai Bhagwan to the PWD minister, seeking relief from congestion in the area. In response, a pre-feasibility study was mandated, with plans for a more detailed study and building preparation to follow based on the initial report. The finalized proposal will be submitted to the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre.
Expressing his enthusiasm, MLA Jai Bhagwan described the flyover as his “dream project,” emphasizing the significant congestion on Bawana Road. He asserted that a well-designed flyover with multiple arms would alleviate commuting challenges. While acknowledging some opposition from a minority concerned about potential impacts on their shops, Bhagwan reassured that such concerns would be addressed in the detailed planning process.
