Security has been significantly heightened in Delhi in anticipation of mock drills scheduled for Wednesday, as directed by the Union Home Ministry. This comes in the wake of escalating Indo-Pak tensions following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
The Delhi Police have stepped up their patrolling efforts, increasing day and night surveillance, with a particular focus on tourist hotspots and commercial areas. Special patrol units have been deployed to secure key locations such as Connaught Place, India Gate, Janpath, Yashwant Palace, Gole Market, and other sensitive installations.
On Tuesday morning, a police team conducted a security inspection at Connaught Place to assess the preparedness for the upcoming drills.
“Ensuring the safety of citizens and maintaining public security remain our top priorities. In line with this, the East District Police have intensified vehicle inspections at key entry and exit points. These proactive measures are aimed at preventing potential terror-related threats, and we request the cooperation of all residents and commuters during this period,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary emphasised that foot patrols are being carried out in various areas to enhance visibility and ensure public safety. “This initiative strengthens community policing and helps maintain law and order,” he said.
In addition to heightened patrolling, senior Delhi Police officials have instructed all Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to formulate detailed plans for the upcoming drills. Sources reveal that the DCPs have begun coordinating with senior officers to further reinforce security measures across the city.
“We have already increased both day and night patrolling and have deployed paramilitary forces along with police personnel at Delhi’s borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. DCPs are personally overseeing arrangements in their districts, collaborating with Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) and Station House Officers (SHOs),” a source disclosed.
The police have also ramped up foot patrols, particularly in the evenings and nights, ensuring a continuous presence in high-traffic areas. Motorcycle patrols and special pickets have been established in densely populated areas to further bolster security.
As part of the comprehensive security measures, interactive policing is being implemented, where beat officers engage with shopkeepers, residents, and commuters to address concerns and raise awareness.

“During the mock drills, teams will deploy the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and dog squads to conduct anti-sabotage checks in high-footfall areas such as Palika Bazaar, Janpath, Khan Market, and near government buildings,” an officer confirmed.
In addition, robust anti-terror measures are in place, including vehicle checks, the establishment of multiple pickets, and the erection of checkposts at key access points. Special attention is being paid to rental and unregistered vehicles, as part of efforts to detect and deter suspicious activity.
