Undertrial Tarun, 24, died at GTB Hospital after being brought unconscious from Mandoli jail, with his family demanding a probe

An undertrial prisoner lodged in Mandoli jail Delhi died at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital after he was brought there in an unconscious state, police said on Thursday. The undertrial’s family has demanded a probe into the death.

The deceased was identified as Tarun (24), a resident of Balbir Nagar in northeast Delhi, they said.

According to police, information about the incident was received at Harsh Vihar police station from GTB Hospital around 10 pm on Wednesday. Tarun was brought to the hospital by a doctor from Mandoli jail.

The attending doctor at GTB Hospital declared him brought dead, police said.

Tarun had been in judicial custody since August 29 after he was arrested by Welcome police in connection with a 2024 case registered under the Delhi Excise Act.

The magistrate concerned was informed about the death around 10:30 pm on Wednesday to conduct an inquiry and inquest proceedings, police said.

A medical board at GTB Hospital conducted the post-mortem examination, following which the body was handed over to Tarun’s parents.

Necessary legal proceedings have been initiated, and further investigation is underway, police said.

Tarun’s mother said that her son was fine when he spoke to her over the phone from jail two days ago. She said he had asked her to bring Rs 2,000 and some clothes.

She said the family was informed by police around 7 am on Thursday that Tarun’s health had deteriorated and he had been taken to GTB Hospital. When they reached the hospital, they were informed that he had died.

His mother alleged that Tarun had no illness and questioned how his condition could have deteriorated so suddenly. She demanded a probe into the matter.
