In a tragic accident, a van collided with a DTC bus, leaving three dead, eight injured on Thursday near Loni Gol Chakkar in Jyoti Nagar, northeast Delhi.
The impact of the accident was severe, causing significant damage to both vehicles. The two identified victims who lost their lives were Savita Devi (55) and Jitender (25). The third deceased, a male, has yet to be identified. Additionally, three of the injured, including the van’s driver, are in critical condition.
Fortunately, the passengers on the bus managed to escape unharmed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey provided details of the incident, stating that on Thursday around 12:30 pm, a Maruti Eeco van crossed the road divider and collided head-on with a DTC bus traveling from Bhajanpura to Nandnagri. The van, functioning as a taxi, was carrying 11 individuals. The injured victims were promptly taken to GTB Hospital, where three people were pronounced dead, and the remaining eight are currently receiving medical treatment.
The injured individuals have been identified as Nitesh (25), his two sisters aged 14 and 9, Nand Kishore Chaudhary (45), his wife Reena (42), their 14-year-old son, the van’s driver Shiv Kumar, and Manzoor Ansari (35).
Savita Devi, one of the victims who lost her life, was Nand Kishore’s mother-in-law.
A case has been registered at Jyoti Nagar police station under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304A (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation is ongoing, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Nand Kishore, who had hired the private van after arriving at Anand Vihar railway station from Muzaffarpur in Bihar, where he and his family had gone to observe the rituals of his mother’s death anniversary, tragically lost his mother-in-law in the accident. His son, Nipunj, shared that the police informed him about the incident. Nand Kishore’s brother, Siddhant, is currently in the ICU at GTB Hospital.
The van’s driver, Shiv Kumar, also sustained injuries in the incident. His sister-in-law mentioned that Shiv has been working as a cab driver for the past two years. She learned about the accident at 4 pm and stated that he suffered injuries to his hands and legs. Shiv Kumar is a widower and has two married sons.
Neha, one of the injured passengers, disclosed that the van was overloaded. She explained that she was traveling from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, to drop her cousin, Sadhana, off at her house in Delhi. They hired the cab around 12 pm, and Neha’s brother, Nilesh, and Sadhana were also injured in the accident.
