Renowned Kathak maestro and human rights advocate Padmashri Shovana Narayan, along with Asavari Repertory, will present a thought-provoking dance production, Anuttar, on March 9, at Kamani Auditorium. The production aims to highlight the struggles of women, the girl child, and marginalized LGBTQ communities, particularly the kinnars (transgender community), through the expressive medium of Kathak.
Scheduled just days after International Women’s Day, Anuttar seeks to address deep-rooted social injustices, urging society to confront uncomfortable truths. The performance consists of three acts, each depicting a different facet of discrimination and suffering.
The first act, Akhir Kyon, explores the psychological trauma faced by the LGBTQ community, focusing on the internal and external battles of those born with a gender identity that does not align with societal norms. The second act, Shakuni, draws inspiration from the Mahabharata, shedding light on the plight of Gandhari, who was forced into marriage for political gain, mirroring the historical oppression of women used as pawns in power struggles. The final act, Toota Yeh Vishwas Kyon, addresses the devastating impact of incest, portraying the trauma not only of the victims but also of their mothers, who often remain unheard and unsupported by society.

Through the intricate movements and emotive storytelling of Kathak, Anuttar seeks to provoke thought and encourage dialogue on these critical issues. The production promises to be a compelling artistic experience, using classical dance as a powerful medium to foster awareness and empathy.
