Renowned Kathak exponent Rani Khanam, along with the repertory of AAMAD Dance Centre, will present her latest Kathak production, Bhav-Gati, on October 8, 2024, at 7:00 PM at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road. The production will showcase the intricacies of Kathak’s traditional, creative, and rare facets, continuing AAMAD Dance Centre’s legacy of promoting the classical dance form.
Rani Khanam, founder of AAMAD Dance Centre, shared her thoughts on the upcoming performance: “Bhav-Gati is an exploration of Kathak’s journey through rhythm, emotion, and expression. The performance will delve into the deeper elements of the dance, blending tradition with innovation.” Khanam, known for her intricate choreography, will also perform a solo piece, which promises to highlight the timeless elegance of the Lucknow style of Kathak.

The production will feature several key compositions, including Yamuna Namami, Laya Gati, and Namami Ashtapadi from Surdas, which will demonstrate the interplay between rhythm and expression. In addition, Andaz-e-Raqs, a Persian-influenced composition, will offer a glimpse into Kathak’s cultural blend, while the Ghazals Mera Dard Naghma e Besada and Kiyun churate ho dekh kar Aankhen will highlight the soulful, Mehfil-style Kathak.
The AAMAD Dance Centre, established over two decades ago, has been a pillar of Kathak’s preservation and promotion. Rani Khanam’s leadership has produced exceptional performances, and Bhav-Gati continues this tradition by showcasing senior dancers and AAMAD’s Repertoire Group, including Shikha Sharma, Nisha Kesari, Ridhima Singh, and others.
The event promises to be a celebration of Kathak’s depth and beauty, combining elaborate movements, stylised choreography, and a deep exploration of Bhav (emotion) and Gati (speed). “Kathak, to me, is not just a dance form but a way of storytelling that brings together music, rhythm, and movement,” Khanam added, emphasising the cultural and artistic importance of the upcoming performance.
