Contemporary artist Raj Shahani
is set to mesmerise art enthusiasts with
his exhibition, titled “Colour, Stone,
Chintz, Grain, and Statue” at Centre for
Contemporary Art (CCA) in Bikaner
House, New Delhi from October 29 to
November 5.

The exhibition will feature a circular
constellation of 27 sculptures in bronze,
marble, granite, stoneware, glass,
terracotta, ceramic, iron, and paper.
Each sculpture is an Apsara, a celestial
being from Indian mythology, and
together they mirror Raj’s own identity as
an artist, performer, and beloved.
While talking to Patriot, Raj Shahani
shared his artistic odyssey, recounting
how his fascination with Apsaras ignited
during his youth, as he encountered their
enchanting depictions in popular culture
and ancient Indian temples. “These
celestial beings became symbols of my
own spirit, representing both beauty and
fragility,” Shahani said.
“In this new exhibition, I will continue
to explore the themes of identity,
transformation, and repair. I use a variety
of materials and techniques to create my
Apsaras, each of which is unique,” he
said.
He elaborated that some sculptures
are crafted from whole pieces of stone,
while others are meticulously assembled
from fragments.
“Additionally, some are brightly
coloured, while others are left in their
natural state,” he added.
