Dhoomimal Gallery, in collaboration with Prinseps, is set to host F.N. Souza: A Continuum, an exhibition that delves beyond the rebellious and controversial image of the legendary modern Indian artist. Opening on March 25, at 6 PM, the showcase offers an intimate perspective on the man behind the provocative brushstrokes—his inspirations, influences, and deeply personal relationships.
Francis Newton Souza, often hailed as the “Enfant Terrible” of modern Indian art, was known for his bold, unflinching critique of society. However, this exhibition aims to present a more nuanced view, shedding light on the personal experiences that shaped his artistic evolution. At its core is Souza’s relationship with Liselotte Souza, a Czech-Jewish actress he met in London in 1954. Their union coincided with one of the most prolific phases of his career, as he expanded his artistic and intellectual horizons through exposure to new literary and theatrical influences.
“Together with Prinseps, we are thrilled to present F.N. Souza: A Continuum, which not only explores Souza’s artistic techniques but also the journey that defined him as a person and painter,” said Uday Jain, Director of Dhoomimal Gallery.
The exhibition offers rare insights into Souza’s personal life, showcasing archival materials such as letters, a rare voice recording, and video snippets that reveal his lesser-known side—a devoted father. These elements provide a striking contrast to his public persona, often defined by rebellion and defiance.
In addition to Souza’s own works, A Continuum also highlights his artistic legacy through the works of his daughter, Keren Souza-Kohn, grandson Solomon Souza, and nephew Ruben Souza, all of whom carry forward elements of his vision in their own distinctive styles.
