Method Delhi will present Golpo Kotha (Stories & Tales), a solo exhibition by Debosmita Samanta, from October 9 to November 26. The exhibition explores intimacy, memory and ancestral wisdom through stories rooted in family, folklore and the fairytales shared by grandmothers.
For Samanta, these “fairytales” extend beyond fantasy. They draw from stories told by her grandmother, combining personal experiences with metaphors that reflected the complexities of her life and the social realities around her. The mythical characters in these narratives become symbols of personal struggles and wider social injustices.
The works in the series emerged from conversations with family members and women Samanta has known since childhood. The characters she depicts include relatives, friends and strangers she encountered during her travels, creating a connection between personal memory and collective heritage.
Golpo Kotha also draws on literary and visual references from Bengali fairytales, short stories and mythological narratives. Through these references, Samanta explores the idea of “home” and the relationships, memories and traditions that shape individual identities.
Born and brought up in West Bengal, Samanta completed her B.V.A. in Painting from the College of Art and Design, Burdwan University, in 2010 and her M.F.A. in Painting from S.N. School of Arts and Communication, Hyderabad University, in 2012. She received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, Canada, in 2025.
