Revisiting the idea of India

An interesting compilation of humour and pain is to be staged on eve of India’s 75th Independence Day. The play, titled ‘To Gandhi Ji With Spelling Mistakes’, around a letter being written by a group of children right after the death of Mahatma Gandhi.

A letter filled with spelling mistakes deals with the issues of partition, communal tension, the issues of language, and obviously, its impact on the new brains.

Saddened by the sudden demise of their beloved Bapu, the letter is being sent to heaven, as a group of children aged 15 to 16 years, seek forgiveness for not being obedient to his sayings.

DIrected by Dr M. Sayeed Alam, written by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, and performed by Ahmad Omair, the one-hour play brings back the era of India’s independence at a time when celebrations of the 75th anniversary of Independence are being organised across the nation. The idea of India remains stuck between the language controversies, a burning communal atmosphere and the colonial hangover.

Directed by Dr. M. Sayeed Alam and performed by the Pierrot’s Troupe, To Gandhi Ji With Spelling Mistakes is a must watch.

When : 4:30 pm,  14 August
