Snaps from the pocket

The first ever mobile photography exhibition will be held in the national capital, where the photographs by Sanjay Bhattacharya will display some striking moments from mundane scenes.

The first stage of every art is the picture an artist saves in his memory. This is the reason Sanjay Bhattacharya found his second passion in photography and ended up being addicted to it.

Born in 1958 in Calcutta, Sanjay Bhattacharya graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta in 1982. He has participated in some national and international art events and workshops and enjoys collaborating with musicians and other artists

Despite being a professional painter, there is no end to his spectacular skills as he uses the camera lens of his phone to build a narrative from conventional scenes.  Breaking his monotonous work schedule, he picked up his camera and went on his first tour of India in 2017 where he clicked 1,000 photos, out of which he showcased a few in his first photography exhibition in the same year.

Once again, he clicked several captivating photos with his mobile phone camera, this time for the current solo exhibition. Being an incredible example of a mobile photographer, he came up with four different segments for the exhibition: some are shots of his hand shadows in mystic lights, while some are of distorted shadows or reflections of him on different elements. A few feature outdoor photography and the last sets are interiors.

Unlike DSLR photography, where the photographer needs to carry several tools and apparatus with them, mobile photography is comparatively convenient. The ease of accessibility and utility allows the photographer to click from different angles, and experiment with the aspect ratio and aperture, until he gets the right shot. Bhattacharya’s photographs will allow the audience to see the unique features of mobile photography in the upcoming exhibition.

Where: Prithvi Art and Cultural Centre, Safdarjung Enclave

When: 16-30 September
