Weavers of contemporary narratives: An immersive show

Gallery Champa Tree presents “Weavers of Contemporary Narratives,” an immersive showcase that unveils India’s diverse tapestry through the distinctive perspectives of five talented artists: Abhijit Saikia, Keerti Pooja, Ravi Chunchula, Samir Mohanty, and Srinivas Pulagam.

This captivating odyssey unfolds a unique narrative, seamlessly intertwining tradition and innovation to articulate a visual lexicon of cultural heritage and modernity. The exhibition features approximately 25 artworks, ranging from watercolors and oil on canvas to acrylic and mixed media.

Delving into the evolution of conventional storytelling in contemporary art over time, the exhibition explores the aestheticisation of narratives. The artists delve into historical architectures, natural landscapes, socio-political contexts, as well as past traditions and beliefs in the context of the present, offering a visual narrative that juxtaposes old and new perspectives from their respective regions.

Directors of Champa Tree Art Gallery, Archana Sapra, and Pooja Bahri express their thoughts on the exhibition, stating, “This exhibition celebrates the dynamic artistic talents emerging from India.

These artists are pushing boundaries and redefining how stories are told and remembered. It provides an extraordinary opportunity to showcase the immense skills of these artists. Through the works of these five artists, stories are reborn, transcending time and place and capturing the essence of a rich art heritage.”

Keerti Pooja (B.1995) a poet in visual art, invites us to explore the intimate moments of everyday life. She creates imaginary worlds that resonate with the universal threads connecting us all through a skilful amalgamation of past and present experiences. Her art becomes a bridge between generations, transcending time and echoing the enduring stories of humanity.

Ravi Chunchula (B. 1989) draws inspiration from ancient painting traditions and uses rice paper as a medium to create stunning satirical and socio-political commentaries. His use of vibrant gouache colours gives life to his paintings, creating a surreal tapestry where history and the contemporary converge. Through his art, he offers viewers an endless dialogue between the past and the present.

Samir Mohanty (B. 1989) presents a unique perspective by amalgamating traditional and contemporary elements to create dreamlike utopias. His mixed-media works can transport us to endless landscapes, representing the multifaceted layers of memories and dreams. Using vibrant flowers and fauna, he creates timeless visual poetry that transcends the boundaries of conventional storytelling.

Srinivas Pulagam (B. 1989) explores the history of ancient India and the architectural elements used in the temple structures of South Indian pantheons. His drawings depict these temples’ icons, architecture, and people in great detail, using multiple layers to create intricate compositions. Pulagam’s pen and ink drawings symbolise the fusion between aesthetics and the ritual elements of worship and nature. The delicate drawings of traditional temple architecture add an ascetic essence to his compositions.
