Delhi Capitals announced via social media that they have parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting after seven years of unsuccessful attempts to secure an IPL title.
Though it’s early to confirm, there is a strong possibility that Sourav Ganguly, the current Team Director of DC, could take on the role of head coach next season.
“As you move on as our head coach, we are finding it incredibly difficult to put it down in words. The four things that you told us about in every huddle — care, commitment, attitude, and effort, they sum up our seven years together,” DC posted on their official ‘X’ handle.

Despite the emotional tone of the post, it is known that Ponting was clearly informed that his performance did not meet the management’s expectations after being given seven years, an unusually long tenure without results at the franchise level.
Ponting, who joined in 2019 and led the team to their first final in 2021, failed to maintain that momentum in subsequent seasons.
“The top brass of Delhi Capitals has intimated Ricky that they aren’t happy that the team didn’t win a championship in seven years and they are trying to look at rejigging the support staff. He won’t be continuing next year,” a source close to DC management said on condition of anonymity.
It is understood that the management wanted Ponting to be more involved in the auction process and team building, rather than arriving just a few weeks before the IPL season starts.
Whether DC will hire a new head coach or ask Ganguly to step in remains to be seen.
Assistant coach Praveen Amre is expected to continue in his role.
The co-owners of DC, JSW and GMR group, are set to meet at the end of this month or early next month to plan the way forward.
Player retention will also be a key topic of discussion. With the limit potentially set at four, DC may have to release either Australia’s Jake-Fraser McGurk or South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs due to the restriction on overseas players.
For the Indian core, retention decisions are straightforward, with skipper Rishabh Pant, all-rounder Axar Patel, and wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav leading the list.
A mega auction is expected ahead of IPL 2025, and several retainable stars from various franchises might enter the auction pool to test their market value. (With inputs from PTI)
