Wicketkeeper-batsman Phil Salt scored a 45-ball 87 to help Delhi Capitals (DC) defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by seven wickets in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Ferozeshah Kotla grounds of the Arun Jaitley Stadium for only their fourth win of the season. Victory helped the home team move above Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and into ninth position.
RCB, riding on an 82-run partnership between Virat Kohli (55 off 46) and Faf du Plessis (45 off 32), scored 181/4 in 20 overs with Mahipal Lomror chipping with an unbeaten 29-ball 54 (6x4s, 3x6s).
In response, Capitals reached the target in 16.4 overs, with Salt hitting six sixes and four fours in his innings.
Salt and skipper Warner set up the chase, scoring 60 runs in the first five overs before the Aussie batsman was removed by Josh Hazlewood.
But such was the domination of Salt that batsmen at the other end needed to just give him company and didn’t need to show any urgency despite the stiff target.
Mitchell Marsh contributed 26 off 17 out of the 59 the duo added for the second wicket in 5.2 overs while Rilee Rossouw chipped in with an unbeaten 35 off 22 deliveries out of the 52 the two added for the third wicket.
By the time Salt was dismissed in the 16th over, bowled after the ball was deflected off his legs on to the stumps, Capitals were well and truly in the game. They reached the target in the 17th over. DC now have eight points from 10 matches while RCB are placed mid-table, in fifth position with 10 points from five wins.
