On the occasion of International Yoga Day on Tuesday, while practising yoga with a large crowd of people gathered at the Thyagaraj Stadium, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said his government intends to make the school children learn yoga.
With the objective of teaching yoga to children, Kejriwal stated, “If the habit (of practising yoga) is inculcated among children, they will be associated with it throughout their lives.” He added that the government has improved the health infrastructure in the capital, but if yoga becomes a part of daily routine, people will not need to go to hospitals.
The event witnessed the participation of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisosia and members of ‘Dilli Ki Yogshala’ — an initiative of the Delhi Government which makes yoga reach door-to-door and aims to transform it into a mass movement by providing a certified yoga instructor to the public, free of cost.
Kejriwal aims to see the transition in the number of people practising yoga — from thousands to lakhs. He pointed out that he gets criticized for attending free yoga classes as he learnt it free of cost when he was in Class 8. But then, he stated that as every essential thing in life, like air, is free, so should yoga be.
Commenting on the statistics, Kejriwal said that more than 17,000 Delhiites practice yoga on a daily basis at 546 locations throughout the capital as part of free classes under Dilli ki Yogshala.
Kejriwal even took to Twitter to motivate people to practice yoga in order to lead a healthy life.
Earlier, the Kejriwal government had launched free of cost yoga classes for Covid patients that were in home isolation during the third wave of the pandemic. The online sessions that were conducted by expert instructors saw the participation of more than 4,700 home quarantined patients.
