A school student and another individual were reportedly attacked with a knife in the Narela area of Delhi on Saturday, police said.
Police said that the alleged perpetrator, a 23-year-old named Vinay, who is believed to be mentally unstable, was confronted by local residents who also subjected him to physical violence.
According to an initial investigation, Vinay suddenly and without any apparent reason attacked an 11-year-old student named Chaman from SKV School. A senior police official stated that the assault occurred without provocation.
A bystander named Rajesh attempted to come to the child’s aid but was also targeted by Vinay. This resulted in Rajesh sustaining injuries to his head, face, and hand, in addition to Chaman suffering a minor injury near his left shoulder.
Both victims were taken to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandar Hospital. Rajesh is still receiving medical treatment, while the student is in a stable condition,said police.
In the meantime, local residents and passersby managed to apprehend Vinay and subjected him to physical retribution. The senior officer noted that Vinay even tried to harm himself with the knife. However, there is no specific explanation for the altercation.
The officer affirmed that legal measures are being pursued in accordance with medico-legal procedures and the victims’ statements.
The police have contacted the accused’s family members, who are expected to provide information about his mental well-being and whether he is undergoing treatment for any mental health issues. (With inputs from PTI)
