Delhi remained engulfed in hazardous air on Monday as the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed 400, placing the city in the ‘severe’ pollution category. Several areas, including Dwarka, Nehru Nagar and Jahangirpuri, recorded alarmingly high pollution levels early in the morning.
Cold weather and stagnant wind conditions have worsened the situation. With little air movement, pollutants remained trapped near the surface, leading to dense smog across the capital. The presence of fog further reduced visibility, affecting daily commuting during the early hours.
Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport were also impacted. On December 22, several flights were delayed or cancelled due to low visibility caused by smog and fog. Airport authorities warned that disruptions could continue on December 23, with passengers reporting delays and rescheduling issues. Official data on cancellations is awaited.

The poor air quality has raised serious health concerns across Delhi-NCR. Doctors have reported a rise in respiratory complaints, particularly among children, the elderly and those with pre-existing breathing conditions. Residents have been advised to limit outdoor exposure and take necessary precautions.
Adding to the challenges, Delhi is also experiencing a cold wave, with foggy mornings expected over the next few days. Weather officials warned that these conditions could further aggravate pollution levels, affecting travel and public health.
