Architecture and spirituality come together in Aaveg: Between the Finite and the Infinite, an exhibition of works by artist and architect Vasant Dora, opening at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, on September 8.
Curated by Jyoti A Kathpalia, the exhibition brings together two bodies of work, Habitat Scapes and Samsara. The first draws on Dora’s engagement with cities, buildings and inhabited spaces, while the second turns towards the cycle of existence and the ideas of Shiva and Shakti, purusha and prakriti.
The works trace a movement from the physical structures of everyday life to questions of existence, using architectural forms, colour and abstraction to consider the relationship between matter and energy, and between the built environment and inner experience.
Dora, who trained at the Chandigarh College of Architecture and later studied at the State University of New York at Buffalo, began his architectural career in Chicago before returning to India. He has worked as an architect for nearly four decades, while continuing to develop his art practice.
Born in Jamshedpur, Dora’s interests extend across architecture, design, poetry and spirituality. His artistic practice reflects this intersection, with the urban grid and architectural structure often serving as a starting point for more abstract explorations.

The exhibition will remain on view at the Visual Arts Gallery from September 8 to 11.
