Fresh rollout to boost green mobility as govt expands fleet, enhances connectivity and aims to curb pollution with modern, tech-enabled buses

The Delhi government is planning to roll out 150 additional electric buses on April 17, its third such launch this year, officials said.

In a push for green mobility in the capital, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has launched around 800 electric buses this year alone, taking the total number of city buses close to 6,500.

In February, marking the BJP government’s one year in power, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched 500 buses from Ramlila Maidan. Subsequently, in March, 300 more electric buses were launched by the government.

“The government is continuously increasing its bus fleet and delivering on its commitments. These new electric buses would not only improve connectivity but also cut down air pollution. The buses are fully equipped with CCTV cameras, panic buttons, real-time tracking, and other facilities,” Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said.

According to officials, the 150 new buses will be flagged off from the East Vinod Nagar depot, along with the inauguration of a new office building.

In this year’s budget envisaging an “emission-free” Delhi, Gupta announced that the government plans to have 7,500 buses by March next year, with 5,800 electric buses among them.

The Delhi government has allocated Rs 8,374 crore for the transport department in financial year 2026-27.

Last week, the Delhi government also launched its draft EV Policy 2.0 which aims to promote adoption of clean mobility through various incentives and regulatory measures. Public suggestion have been invited on the draft for 30 days, after which the policy will be placed before the cabinet.
