Four individuals, including a married couple, have been arrested for allegedly defrauding a Delhi Police official of more than Rs two lakhs. The suspects have been identified as Kurban Ali (29), his wife Sana Parveen (27), Souvik Panja (27), and Ajay Jana (27).

According to officials, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Vinod Tyagi, who is stationed in the East district, received a call from an unknown number. The caller, pretending to be a fraudster, informed him that he had won a cashback on a PhonePe transaction and instructed him to download a specific application to claim the cashback. ASI Tyagi followed the instructions and downloaded the application, unknowingly granting the scammers full access to his mobile device.

Taking advantage of this access, the fraudster proceeded to transfer Rs.2,12,000 from the ASI’s bank account and credit card through multiple transactions. The investigation revealed that the stolen amount was transferred to a digital wallet connected to several different bank accounts located in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and other parts of the country.

The Delhi Police, with information obtained about the involved bank accounts, conducted several raids in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, and East Midnapore, West Bengal. As a result of these operations, two of the accused individuals were apprehended in Sitapur, while the remaining suspects were captured in East Midnapore.

The police successfully recovered the entire amount that had been cheated from the victim. Additionally, they discovered chequebooks, ATM cards, passbooks, and other related items in the possession of Kurban Ali and Sana Parveen. Ali, a nursing graduate, was running a medical store, while Panja was employed as a manager at a gas agency. (With inputs from PTI)
