One of the most wanted fugitives in India, Deepak “Boxer”, was brought to New Delhi by the police authorities on Wednesday after being arrested in Mexico.
A two-member team of Delhi Police’s Special Cell accompanied Deepak to Terminal 3 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport from Mexico via Istanbul at around 6 AM in the morning.
According to police officials, Deepak will be interrogated for his alleged involvement in criminal activities, including the killing of a builder in north Delhi’s Civil Lines area.
The gangster, a national-level boxing champion, was attempting to enter the United States illegally via Mexico and intended to operate his organized crime gang in Delhi and neighboring states from there before being caught, said a senior police official.
Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) HGS Dhaliwal stated that the gangster had taken multiple routes and stops to reach Mexico using the “donkey” method, but he landed in their net with the help of the office of the Legal Attache, US Embassy, New Delhi. This is the first time that Delhi Police has arrested a gangster in an operation outside the country.
The police had announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh on information leading to the arrest of Deepak, who headed the Gogi gang allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Dhaliwal mentioned that Delhi Police tracked Deepak’s movements after receiving information in January that he had obtained a fake passport in the name of Ravi Antil from Bareilly to flee the country.
Deepak took a flight from Kolkata to Dubai, then went to Almaty, Kazakhstan, and reached Turkey, then headed for Spain. After taking multiple routes, he finally reached Mexico. “Our teams were constantly tracking his routes,” Dhaliwal said at a press conference held on Tuesday.
He added that Delhi Police zeroed in on the gangster’s location in Cancun, a city notorious for human traffickers and the narcotics mafia, after interrogating several of his aides and using technical inputs. Dhaliwal also said that Deepak’s intention behind reaching Mexico was to reach America, with the help of human traffickers, where he would join his other associates. From there, he had planned to run his organized crime group in Delhi and neighboring states.
Deepak, a resident of Gannaur in Haryana’s Sonipat district, became the head of the Gogi gang after the killing of its head Jitendra Mann alias Gogi inside the Rohini court complex by two men in September 2021. The gangster is wanted in India in ten sensational cases, including murder and extortion, over the last five years, said police officials.
The arrest of Deepak is the result of coordinated efforts by the crime branch and special cell, according to police sources. The interrogation of Deepak will likely reveal more information about his criminal activities and associates. (With inputs from PTI)
