A 20-year-old domestic help committed suicide in Ghazipur area of east Delhi, police said on Monday, adding that an abetment to suicide case has been registered against her employer.

The case has been registered at the Ghazipur police station.

According to a senior police official, the bereaved mother of the deceased lodged a formal complaint, prompting law enforcement to initiate action under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with cases of abetment of suicide.

He said that the unfortunate incident took place around 6:20 am on Saturday, prompting a call to the Police Control Room (PCR).

Police said that the caller informed the police that the young domestic worker had been found hanging in her room. A rapid police response followed, with officers arriving at the scene promptly.

The victim was identified as Neha, a native of Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh. She was found hanging from a ceiling fan using a scarf, they said, adding that despite a thorough search of the premises, no suicide note was recovered, leaving authorities with limited insights into the potential reasons behind this tragic event.

According to police, the lifeless body of Neha was then transported to LBS Hospital, while the family of the deceased was duly notified.

The family’s arrival was delayed until late evening, complicating the investigation process. Upon their arrival, the police proceeded to record their statements, said police.

Subsequently, they were requested to return the following morning to facilitate a post-mortem examination. However, they failed to appear as instructed, further impeding the investigation, police added.

An official said that around 3 pm, on the same day, the mother of the deceased presented herself at the police station.

He said that in a written complaint, she alleged that her daughter’s employer had a role to play in the tragedy, asserting that her daughter’s suicide was the outcome of abetment by the employer.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working tirelessly to piece together the circumstances that led to this devastating incident. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health support and maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all members of society, police said. (With inputs from PTI)
