A man has been arrested for allegedly stalking a woman and her daughters in the Delhi Cantonment area, police said on Monday.
According to the complaint, on August 23 at 8:30 pm, the woman was walking towards Gopinath Market with her mother and two daughters. Her daughters, who were about 100-150 metres ahead, were followed by a car for nearly 15 minutes, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Rohit Meena.
The complainant alerted her daughters and posted about the incident on social media. She also filed a complaint at the Delhi Cantt police station the following day.
An FIR was lodged under sections 78(1) BNS and 12 of the POCSO Act, and further investigation was initiated, Meena said.
A team was formed to catch the offender. They analysed CCTV footage of the car over a distance of more than 115 kilometres, tracking it from Delhi Cantonment to Pari Chowk in Noida and back. However, due to the absence of CCTV cameras beyond Pari Chowk in UP, the full footage could not be obtained.
The vehicle’s number was traced, revealing it was registered to Tinku, the son of a criminal wanted in an attempted murder case in UP, who has been on the run for six months, the DCP revealed.
The police discovered that the car frequently crossed the Chilla check post at the UP-Delhi border before returning shortly after.
After staking out the check post for 10 days, the team arrested the accused, identified as Rajat (24), a resident of Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. He was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody, DCP Meena added. (With inputs from PTI)
