‘Operation Kawach’: Delhi Police raids 784 locations, 90 narco-offenders arrested

'Operation Kawach' is an initiative started in Delhi last May to apprehend individuals involved in the trafficking and distribution of narcotic substances

Delhi: The Crime Branch, in coordination with all districts and special units, carried out simultaneous raids at more than 700 locations across the city, resulting in the arrest of 90 narco-offenders, officials reported on Friday.

The operation, named ‘Kavach’ 7.0, commenced on Wednesday and continued through Thursday, they stated.

During the crackdown, authorities arrested 90 narco-offenders in 87 cases related to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The police seized 553 grams of heroin, 43 kilograms of marijuana, 199 grams of cocaine, and over 2 lakh habit-forming tablets, according to Special Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Devesh Chandra Srivastva.

In total, 784 locations were raided during the operation, the police confirmed.

The officer added that the operation also targeted illegal arms and illicit liquor trade. Under the Delhi Excise Act, 157 cases were registered, resulting in 161 arrests and the recovery of more than 33,000 liquor bottles.

Furthermore, 29 people were arrested in 27 cases under the Arms Act, leading to the confiscation of one revolver, one pistol, six country-made pistols, 11 live cartridges, 18 knives, a surgical blade, and Rs 24,000 in cash.

“As part of the operation, 909 individuals were placed under preventive custody. Additionally, three gambling cases resulted in three arrests. Teams also took action against 1,407 violators involved in the illegal sale of tobacco within 100 metres of educational institutions,” the Special CP stated.

He emphasised that ‘Kavach,’ launched in May 2023, is a recurring intensive drive aimed at cracking down on both street-level drug peddlers and high-profile traffickers.
