439 cases of MCC violations registered ahead of Delhi assembly elections

Delhi Police registered 439 cases of alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) between January 7 and January 20 in the lead-up to the assembly elections in the national capital, an official said on Tuesday.

During this period, 15,495 individuals were arrested under various laws, including the Excise Act, as per an official statement.

The Delhi Police intensified border checkpoint surveillance and launched operations targeting illegal activities such as arms, liquor, and drug smuggling, the statement noted.

Since the MCC was enforced on January 7, the police have recorded 439 cases of alleged MCC violations, seizing 238 illegal firearms and 332 cartridges, according to the statement.

Additionally, 38,075 litres of liquor worth over Rs 1 crore, 104.90 kg of drugs valued at more than Rs 17 crore, and over 1,200 banned injections were confiscated.

Law enforcement also seized Rs 3.22 crore in cash and 37.39 kg of silver, the statement added.

The Delhi Police has been busting several criminals and seizing cash, illicit liquor and firearms as the assembly elections in the national capital are inching closer.

On Monday, Delhi Police busted an interstate gang of illegal firearm suppliers with the arrest of its three members and recovery of several firearms.

The operation was carried out by the team of Special Staff of Delhi Police of North district. The recovered items included five semi-automatic pistols, six country-made pistols (desi kata) and 28 live cartridges.

According to the Delhi Police, the accused were also involved in supplying firearms to criminals involved in the infamous Pragati Maidan Tunnel Robbery case of 2023.

Among the three accused, two of them have been involved in the supplying of illegal firearms for the past 20 years.

On Sunday, Police nabbed a liquor supplier for smuggling and transporting illicit liquor across the Haryana-Delhi border ahead of Republic Day and the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

Polling for all 70 assembly seats in Delhi is scheduled for February 5, with vote counting set for February 8.
