The Atorium Foundation is set to present a cultural production with its latest dance drama, Chitrangada – Stree Ki Sarvoch Dhawani, an evocative reimagining of Rabindranath Tagore’s classic work. Slated for May 12 at 6.30 PM at Muktadhara Auditorium, near Gole Market, this contemporary retelling of the story of Chitrangada, the warrior princess of Manipur, weaves together rich threads of dance, music and narrative to bring alive a powerful feminist legacy rooted in ancient mythology.
Directed by Rahul Ray and choreographed by Nisha Ray, the production draws from Tagore’s adaptation of a Mahabharata episode to deliver a message that is deeply resonant with today’s conversations around gender, identity and empowerment. Featuring a dynamic fusion of classical, semi-classical and creative Indian dance forms—Kathak, Mayurbhanj Chhau, and the Uday Shankar style—the performance charts Chitrangada’s evolution from a valiant warrior to a woman unafraid to claim her identity on her own terms.

“Tagore’s Chitrangada is a visionary celebration of a woman’s right to self-determination and power,” said Rahul Ray. “Through this rendition, we aim to honour her spirit—not merely as a mythological figure, but as a symbol of the enduring struggle for equality and freedom.”
